How to Get Rid of Car Odors and Pet Hair for Good

Hands using a vacuum nozzle to deeply clean a fabric car seat, removing dirt and stains
Air fresheners only cover smells. Here is what actually removes odors and stubborn dog hair from seats and carpets.

Smells in a car almost always come from something you can find: spilled drinks, food crumbs, damp carpet, pet dander or smoke residue in the headliner. Remove the source and the smell goes with it.

Step 1: Find the source

Check under the seats, seat rails, door pockets and the spare tire well. Damp carpets from winter slush are a common cause of musty smells in Michigan.

Step 2: Deep clean, then treat

Shampoo and hot water extraction pull out what vacuuming leaves behind. For lingering odors, an enzyme cleaner or an ozone or steam treatment neutralizes what is left.

Pet hair needs the right tools

Dog hair weaves into carpet fibers. Rubber pet-hair brushes and stones loosen it so a strong vacuum can pull it out. A seat cover or cargo liner makes the next clean much easier.

Keep it fresh

  • Use rubber floor mats from November to April
  • Do not leave wet gym clothes or towels in the car
  • Vacuum every couple of weeks if your dog rides along
